A Thought on Dakimakura Covers

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 6:18 am

The most valued treasures in my otaku collection are Nanoha and Fate dakimakura covers on sale in Comiket 70. Recently, I impulse bought a dakimakura cover featuring Primula that comes with Dengeki Hime Navel Special (NSFW), and it was delivered to me yesterday via DHL. So, I swapped Fate-chan out of my body pillow to try hugging Rim-chan to sleep last night. It turns out that the Nanoha cover is my favourite after all eventhough the one with Rim-chan is so much more faptastic. (NSFW) Continue reading “A Thought on Dakimakura Covers”

Moe in the 90’s: PASSION, FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, and GIANT ROBOTS!

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 10:03 am

Watching Martian Successor Nadesico, I made a striking discovery. The first users of the word “moe” must be Super Robot otaku!

Here are some evidences. In Episode 2 of Nadesico, Daigouji Gai, one of the prominent animated otaku, describe a certain anime show as:

「全39はモエモエっす!」
All 39 episodes are so moemoe!” Continue reading “Moe in the 90’s: PASSION, FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, and GIANT ROBOTS!”

Twintail Character Database

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 6:17 am

A fellow named KATIE has created a web site TwinTailSanctuary that keeps a list of all female characters donning pigtails from anime, manga, and games. According to the site, there are at least 538 characters with this moe-zokusei. You can take a look at the list here: http://www.twintailsanctuary.net/twintail.html. Pretty impressive IMHO.

The guy seems to be obsessed with blonde twintails, in particular Fate Testarossa, and he also loves Feena-sama. (Pretty much the same taste as mine.) As for me, Emelenzia Beatrix Rudiger recently stole the position of favourite twintail girl from Fate.

By the way, according to the Japanese wikipedia, the word twintail is actually originated from otakus. However, seeing that many of the articles regarding anime fandom there lack source materials, I still wonder if this is entirely true.

This discovery prompted me to googled for some more databases of certain types of characters. Here are what I came up with before I became bored:

Hmm… Seems like I get bored quite easily.

Random Bits #2

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 9:09 am
  • I have been playing Xenosaga III for two weeks now, and just ended Chapter 8 last weekend. The game looks great, and I feel that they really try to wrap things up nicely this time. I’m looking forward to finish the last chapter, but that probably is not going to happen soon because I have been using my friend’s PS2, and he just got his FFXII today. Bandai, Gunpla, and the World

Tag: Anime/Manga Related, Japanese Pop Culturecardcaptor @ 2:55 am

Today, I attended the panel presentation “Toy As Media: Bandai, Giant Robots, and Future Entertainment” organized by Prof. Ian Condry of MIT. The panelists were Katsuhiro Izumi, who’s a Chief Producer in the Boy Toys department of Bandai, and Adam Newman of Bandai’s International Business Strategy wing. The lecture room was packed, the presentation was interesting, and I learned a lot of interesting facts and tidbits I would like to share with you. Continue reading “Bandai, Gunpla, and the World”

Lolier than Thou

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 7:12 am

As we know it, loli characters are the trend in the present otaku world. Characters like the three Nanoha girls, Eve, Franca, blah blah blah are pervading the anime landscape. Without them, you surely feel that the anime lacks a certain appeal.

Of course, loli character is too big a topic to discuss in this short entry. What I want to do this time is, like my post earlier about the character stereotype “Blonde, in Black, and Kick-ass,” I would like to identify yet another interesting character type, which I call the “lolier-than-thou.” Continue reading “Lolier than Thou”

Female Character Speech Pattern Compendium

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 2:18 pm

The way an anime character speaks makes a lot of impact on his/her popularity. Suiseiseki wouldn’t have been this popular if she hadn’t ended all of her sentences with “desu,” and Wilhemina would have been just a forgetable character if she hadn’t expressed her militarist trait with “dearimasu.” This entry attempts to identify various speech patterns of anime/manga characters and compile a growing list of charectors using them. The reason why I’m doing this: well, categorizing is fun, of course, and I’m bored. Continue reading “Female Character Speech Pattern Compendium”

Anime Pilgrimage #1: Visiting the Land of Gods

Tag: Anime/Manga Related, Life, Tourismcardcaptor @ 6:43 pm

On the weekend of August 5-6, 2006, I traveled from Kanagawa prefecture, my summer residence, to Hiroshima prefecture, partly to visit Miyajima, one of the three most beautiful views in Japan, and the acclaimed A-bomb domb. (My timing could not have been better since August 6th was the day the A-bomb was dropped in Hiroshima.) However, my real purpose was to conduct a 聖地巡礼 to the town of Onomichi, the location of various Japanese movies, and, more importantly, the 2005 summer anime Kamichu! If you haven’t watched it, shame on you. One cannot find any single anime character in existence more moe than Yurie-sama. (I wish her good luck in the current Saimoe tournament, until she faces O-haruhi-sama, that is.) Anyways, Geneon has licensed the anime and has published some DVDs. So, go support the sweetest goddess in the anime world if you’re so inclined. Continue reading “Anime Pilgrimage #1: Visiting the Land of Gods”

Blonde, in Black, and Kick-ass

Tag: Anime/Manga Relatedcardcaptor @ 6:06 am

While many people are megane-moe, meido-moe, ane-moe, imouto-moe, etc, I find myself attracted to anime/manga/game girls having the properties in the title of the post: they (1) are blonde, (2) wear black outfits, and (3) have lots of potential to kick ass, which usually manifests itself in the form of high destructive power. I sincerely think that there should be a moe-zokusei dedicated to them. Although there are few in number right now, there shall be more in the near future. At the moment, I only know four, and they all rank very high in my list of favourite characters. Continue reading “Blonde, in Black, and Kick-ass”
