Lolier than Thou

As we know it, loli characters are the trend in the present otaku world. Characters like the three Nanoha girls, Eve, Franca, blah blah blah are pervading the anime landscape. Without them, you surely feel that the anime lacks a certain appeal.

Of course, loli character is too big a topic to discuss in this short entry. What I want to do this time is, like my post earlier about the character stereotype “Blonde, in Black, and Kick-ass,” I would like to identify yet another interesting character type, which I call the “lolier-than-thou.”

Basically, she’s a child, but she has lived longer than any normal human does. She also possesses great wisdom, and shows her mature side when she needs to (and that’s when she becomes totally awesome). You know she is neither innocent nor childish because she is an adult in the body of a child, and there’s a constant aura of superiority eminating from her. (That’s why Remilia and Flandre does not qualify because they are childish to the core.) Often, the reason her age freezes is connected to an unfortunate past. What more do you ask from an interesting character?

So, here comes some specimens of the species. I know only three at the moment. Please tell me the ones you know.

Furude Rika (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

Do I need to tell you Rika is my favourite Higurashi character? Well, I fell in love with her mi~☆, nipah~☆, and sheer loli-ness before I went ahead and spoiled myself about her story. After that, she changed from yet another cutesy loli to a totally awesome lolier-than-thou to reckon with. The ordeal she goes through throughout the story and her struggle to achieve a happy life make her a very interesting and deep character.

Oh, and that “I will play with you. Come here, Cleaver girl” line just seals the deal. Rika is superior! She can pwn j00 hard, but she just wants to keep you entertained for a while. Her speech pattern even changes from her normal boku+nanodesu style to the domineering feminime one. Multiple personality is teh awesome.

Rika is not only about superiority and loli-ness though. She has her own flaws too. She’s not omniscient, and she is about to lose her heart in trying to win against the “master plan.” We see her will to fight renewed at the end of Episode 26 as she cries tears of joy and hope. If Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen are going to be animated, we will of course see Rika’s simple wish fulfilled by her own hard work and friendship; the greatest moment in Higurashi indeed.

By the way, this illustration by a Thai doujin artist named “Rayno” cracked me up hard.

The title of Jojo in Thai is ล่าข้ามศควรรษ (literally, “Trans-century Hunt”).
Here, it’s ลูปข้ามศตวรรษ = Trans-century Loop.

Evangeline A.K. McDowell (Mahou Sensei Negima!)

Lolier-than-thou tsundere vampire who’s blonde, in black, and kick-ass! Yes, Eva-sama has so many moe properties that make a fanby like me swoon. Too bad, Yueyue stole the position of my favourite Negima from her recently, but she’s awesome nonetheless. Let us witness her lolirific grace together.

Tragic past: Check.

Superiority: Check.

Vulnerability: Check.

Kuki (Raimuiro Series)

This one is probably the oddball of the bunch. The reason why her body is that of a child is just because she’s a demon, and she’s been like that since God knows; no tragic past is implied whatsoever. We also don’t know how superior she is in combat, but I guess it’s indisputable in bed. She doesn’t seem to have any vulnerability or love interest either. She’s quite hard to relate to, but she did fill the role of the loli character in a novel way, didn’t she?

I think that Huey Freeman from The Boondocks would count as a “shota” character (male version) because of his radical left tendencies and his infamous pilot episode quote, oy. Killer show, it is oy.
